Careful packaging is the first line of defence against damage during transport. Impacts, pressure, humidity: parcels are subject to many stresses. Here is the complete guide to packing any type of shipment correctly.
1. Choosing the right packaging materials
The quality of the materials makes all the difference. Here is what you should have on hand:
- Double-wall cardboard: use it for heavy or fragile items. It is stronger than single-wall cardboard.
- Bubble wrap: essential for fragile items (glass, ceramics, electronics).
- Kraft paper: ideal for filling gaps and absorbing shocks.
- Polyethylene foam: for very delicate or valuable items.
- Packing tape: use tape at least 50 mm wide, reinforced for heavy parcels.
2. The fundamental rules of good packaging
Whatever the contents, these principles always apply:
- The box must be the right size: neither too big (the contents move) nor too small (risk of crushing).
- Fill the gaps: no empty space should remain inside. A parcel that "rattles" is a parcel that will break.
- Protect corners and edges: these are the areas most exposed to impacts.
- Seal every seam: H-shaped strips on the top and bottom of the box.
- Label clearly: tracking number, legible address, "Fragile" or "This side up" markings if needed.
3. Packing fragile items
Glasses, mirrors, ceramics, electronic devices: these items need special care:
- Wrap each piece individually in bubble wrap (bubbles facing inwards).
- For hollow items (vases, cups), fill the inside with crumpled paper.
- Place flat items (plates, paintings) vertically rather than flat.
- If you are sending several fragile items, separate them with layers of padding.
- Clearly mark "FRAGILE" on several sides of the box.
4. Packing liquids and sensitive products
Liquids need double protection against leaks:
- Seal containers tightly (tape around the caps).
- Place each container in a sealed plastic bag.
- Surround them with absorbent materials (paper, foam).
- Check transport restrictions for certain products (aerosols, flammable products).
5. The strength test before shipping
Before handing your parcel over to the carrier, carry out these checks:
- Shake the box gently: you should not hear anything moving inside.
- Press on the sides: the box should not cave in or lose its shape.
- Check that all the seams are properly taped.
- Make sure the label is legible and firmly attached.
Good packaging protects not only your shipment but also your customer relationship. If damage occurs despite all these precautions, do not hesitate to contact our customer service with photos of the parcel so we can process your claim as quickly as possible.
